Is This Finally Orlando Pirates' Year?

Pirates sit two points behind Sundowns with three games to play. After years of near-misses and heartbreak, everything about this squad feels different. We ask: can they actually do it?

Two points. Three games. That is what separates Orlando Pirates from ending the longest title drought in their proud history. After Saturday's 2-1 win over Swallows FC โ€” sealed by Tshegofatso Mabasa's late header โ€” and Mamelodi Sundowns' damaging 1-1 draw at SuperSport United, the PSL title race has been blown wide open in the most dramatic fashion imaginable.

This is not the first time Pirates have looked over the fence at the summit. In 2022 they faded. In 2023 they collapsed in February. But something about this iteration of the squad โ€” the composure, the belief, the sheer refusal to buckle under pressure โ€” feels genuinely different.

What Has Changed This Season

The biggest shift is structural. Josรฉ Riveiro has found his best XI and largely stuck with it. The spine of Sipho Chaine in goal, Tapelo Xoki and Olisa Ndah in central defence, Evidence Makgopa partnering Mabasa up front โ€” it has taken two full seasons to bed in, but the combination now functions with the kind of automaticity you only see in genuinely title-winning units. There are no passengers. Every man knows his role and executes it without hesitation.

Monnapule Saleng has also returned from his injury at exactly the right time. His cameo against Swallows โ€” 25 minutes off the bench โ€” reminded everyone what Pirates look like when their most dangerous weapon is available. He created the winning chance with a diagonal run that split the Swallows backline in two.

The Fixtures That Matter

Pirates have Golden Arrows (away), Sekhukhune United (home), and Cape Town City (away) remaining. On paper, two of those should be wins. Sundowns face SuperSport United again, Stellenbosch, and Chippa. Neither team has a walk in the park โ€” but Pirates' remaining schedule carries more historical baggage. Cape Town City have beaten Pirates twice at the DHL Newlands Stadium this decade and will not roll over for anyone.

The Psychological Factor

Title races are won in the head before they are won on the pitch. Sundowns have been here before โ€” they know how to handle pressure, how to manage a squad through the business end of the season. Pirates are less experienced in this territory. But Riveiro is a calm, methodical coach who has shown no sign of panic. He rotated wisely last week and was rewarded with freshness when it mattered on Saturday. That is the mark of a coach who believes in the process, not just the result.

The Verdict

This is the closest Pirates have come since their 2011/12 title. The squad is deep enough. The coach is good enough. The belief, finally, looks real. If Sundowns drop one more point anywhere in their remaining three games, Pirates are champions. After years of watching Sundowns parade the trophy, that prospect feels less like a dream and more like an appointment with destiny.

Three games. Two points. Dare to believe.
