Mamelodi Sundowns are about to win their 13th league title. Their dominance is turning the PSL into a one-horse race. We unpack both sides of the argument.

Mamelodi Sundowns are, by every measure, the greatest football club South Africa has ever produced. Their infrastructure, their coaching staff, their recruitment model — it is all world class. But their dominance is quietly hollowing out the PSL as a competition, and we need to talk about it.

The Case For Sundowns

You cannot argue with excellence. Sundowns have invested properly in football. Their Academy produces players. Their medical staff is professional. Their data analysis department rivals clubs in Europe. They have raised the bar for what professionalism means in South African football, and every other club has had to respond.

Their CAF Champions League campaigns have given SA football a presence on the continental stage that we have not had in decades. When Sundowns play in North Africa or West Africa, they represent all of us.

The Case Against

But here is the problem: the PSL title race has been over by February for three consecutive seasons. The neutral fan — the guy who is not a Sundowns, Chiefs, or Pirates supporter — has nothing to watch. Predictability kills engagement, and engagement is what fills stadiums and drives broadcast revenues that smaller clubs depend on.

Orlando Pirates are the only team with the squad depth to genuinely challenge, and even they are 20 points behind this season. Kaizer Chiefs, historically South Africa's most supported club, are in a five-year rebuild that shows no end in sight.

What Needs to Change

The PSL needs a financial fair play framework. It needs broadcast revenue sharing that gives clubs like Golden Arrows and Sekhukhune the budget to retain their best players instead of selling them to Sundowns every January. Without competitive balance, you don't have a league — you have a training ground.

Sundowns deserve their success. But South African football deserves a real title race too.
