José Riveiro has transformed Orlando Pirates from a mid-table side into PSL title challengers in two seasons. We break down the tactics, the transfers, and the philosophy.

When Orlando Pirates appointed José Riveiro in 2022, the reaction among supporters was largely one of confusion. A Spanish coach with no African football experience, brought to Soweto? It sounded like another desperate roll of the dice.

Two seasons later, Riveiro has transformed Pirates into the only realistic challenger to Sundowns' dominance — and the tactical blueprint he has installed is one of the most coherent in PSL history.

The System

Riveiro plays a compact 4-2-3-1 that transitions into a 4-4-2 out of possession. The two holding midfielders — typically Ndlondlo and Shandre Campbell — sit narrow and deep, protecting the centre-backs while the fullbacks push high to create width. It is disciplined, hard to break down, and devastating on the counter.

The Key Signing

Monnapule Saleng remains the most dangerous winger in the PSL when fit. His ability to run at defenders in tight spaces and his willingness to shoot from anywhere makes him impossible to defend one-on-one. When Saleng is flying, Pirates are flying.

The Challenge Ahead

The gap to Sundowns remains significant — roughly 11 points this season. To close it, Pirates need a prolific striker in the January window. Their goals-scored tally, while impressive, relies too heavily on Saleng. A focal point up front — a genuine number 9 — would transform them from title challengers to title winners.

Riveiro has earned the trust of the Buccaneers faithful. The revolution is real. Now Pirates need to finish it.
