Mexico thrashed South Africa to open the tournament while Czechia and South Korea played out the second match of the day. Here's what Day One taught us about the 2026 World Cup.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup — the largest in history with 48 teams — got underway on June 11 with two Group A matches played in Mexico. Here is what we learned from the opening day of football.

Mexico Are Dangerous at Home

There was never any doubt that playing at the Azteca would give Mexico an edge, but the scale of the home advantage was still striking. El Tri were compact, quick in transition, and ruthless when South Africa made errors. Julián Quiñones's early goal set the tone, and Raúl Jiménez's second-half header killed the game. Mexico's pressing was relentless and their set-piece delivery looked threatening throughout. Opposition teams should be warned: this is not a Mexico side that will lie down for anyone in front of their own fans.

South Africa's Discipline Is a Problem

Two red cards in one game is extraordinary. Bafana Bafana gave away a clean sheet opportunity and then made it worse with reckless challenges. Sphephelo Sithole's denial of a clear goal-scoring opportunity in the 49th minute was the turning point of the match. Themba Zwane's dismissal eight minutes from time was inexcusable. Hugo Broos — or whoever handles discipline in the Bafana camp — has serious work to do before the next match.

Group A Sets Up Perfectly

Mexico lead Group A with 3 points. Czechia are level on points after their match against South Korea. South Africa are already bottom with 0 points and two suspended players heading into their next fixture. The group is not done — but it is already taking shape in a way that makes Mexico's path to the knockout rounds look very manageable.

The Tournament Itself Looks Magnificent

Beyond the football, the 2026 World Cup is already shaping up as a spectacular event. The opening ceremony — headlined by Shakira, Tyla, and Alejandro Fernández — set a high bar. The Azteca looked stunning. And with 48 teams across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, this tournament is going to feel like a football festival for six straight weeks.

Spain and France remain the betting favourites. Team USA open their campaign against Paraguay in Los Angeles. There are 103 games still to be played. The fun has only just begun.
